My Cambodia Trip – Part III – Ta Prohm Temple

My Notebook

Our next destination was to visit Ta Prohm, a temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province.  It was built in the Bayon style in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.  It was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university.  The most distinctive features about Ta Prohm have been the trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings.  These features have made the temple very popular for tourists.

Although the temple was built in the Bayon style, it does not have many narrative bas-reliefs, compared by Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom.   One explanation is that the Buddhist artwork must have been destroyed by Hindu iconoclasts following the death of Jayavarman VII.
